Captain Ronald ReisUSS John C. Stennis
Captain Ronald Reis graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a degree in Applied Mathematics emphasis mechanical engineering. He received his commission through Aviation Officer Candidate School and was subsequently winged in December,1987.
Operationally he served in flying assignments with VAQ-132, 134, and 137. These tours included combat deployments embarked aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) and USS George Washington (CVN 73).
As Commanding Officer and a "Top Ten" ball flyer, Captain Reis led VAQ-132 during its 2004 Operation Iraqi Freedom combat deployment. Subsequently, the sailors aboard VAQ-132 were awarded the Radford, COMNAVAIRLANT Battle "E", and the CVW-17 Top Hook Award. Also, that year VAQ-132 made the AIRLANT Retention Honor Roll.
His most memorable shore duties include being the Aide-de-Camp to the Commander-in-Chief United States Space Command, which led to being selected as the Aide-de-Camp to the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Captain Reis completed his D.C. assignment as the Branch Chief of the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, J-5, Western Hemisphere Division.
Following completion of the Navy's Nuclear Power program he was assigned as the Executive Officer of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), where he completed a full IDTC and deployment. He is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and Auburn University receiving masters degrees in Military History and Public Administration.
Most recently, Captain Reis commanded USS Nassau (LHA 4). At one point during the seven month deployment, Nassau accumulated 159 consecutive days at sea. During this tour the Sailors aboard USS Nassau were awarded their 3rd and 4th consecutive Battle "E", CNSF Unit Tactics award, CNO Safety "S", Green "H", and Golden Anchor.
Reis has accumulated more than 3600 flight hours and 640 arrested landings. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2), Meritorious Service Medal (3), Air Medal (4), Navy Commendation Medal (2), Navy Achievement Medal, Battle "E" (6) and various campaign medals and ribbons.
